Daniel in the Lion Den
John – How about I tell everyone a great true story that is in our Bibles. What do ya say?
Kevin- Can I help!
John- Sure, what story should we tell?
Kevin- What about that story with the man and the lions?
John- O.K. Daniel in the lions Den it is.
Kevin- I’m not sure how it all began.
P- Let’s see it starts out when King Darius decided he needed some help
to rule the people of Babylon. Daniel had been the highest ruler in the kingdom under the previous king. So of course, because Daniel did such a good job, King Darius asked Daniel and two other men to rule under him.
Kevin- Oh, but Daniel did such a great job and so much better than all the other rulers!
John- Yes, and the king was thinking about promoting him to be the ruler over the whole kingdom.
Kevin- The other two men didn’t like that and wanted to do something to get rid of Daniel.
John- That’s right! The other two rulers were jealous and decided they had to do something! The problem was Daniel was doing such a good job that they couldn’t find anything wrong with his work.
So they said to each other,” We’ll never find a reason to bring charges against Daniel unless
it has something to do with the laws of his God.”
Kevin- I don’t like their way of thinking.
John- I don’t like it either! Anyway they got an idea and they went to the king and said,
” O King Darius, live forever! We all think that you should write a decree and enforce it, a law that says anyone who prays to any god or man except you, during the next thirty days, should
be thrown into the lions’ den.”
Kevin- They can’t stop Daniel from praying to God! Even though they are doing something bad, God will take care of everything.
John- Of course! They were just trying to butter up the king and get Daniel in trouble all at the same time! And we know exactly what Daniel did.
Kevin- (get on knees and looks up to heaven as if praying)
John- That’s right, three times a day he got down on his knees and prayed, giving thanks to his God, just as he had always done before. They didn’t scare him none!!
Kevin- It would be crazy for Daniel not to pray to God because he would lose his relationship with Him. It’s good he knew better.
John- That’s right Daniel knew who was God and who was not! And no law makes a king God!!!
Kevin- What happened next?
John- The trouble makers found Daniel praying to God and went to the king.
They said, “Didn’t you write a law saying anyone who prays to a god or a man that is not you would be thrown into the lions’ den?” And the king said ” yes I did and it still stands.”
Kevin- The king didn’t realize that the two rulers were setting up Daniel for a fall.
John- ” Daniel, O king, pays no attention to you and your law and prays three times a day.” Boy did the king ever feel awful! He tried all day long to find a way around having to put Daniel in the lions’ den.
Kevin- It’s good the king liked Daniel but most of all it’s good that Daniel knew God and had God on his side!
John- That’s right and at sundown guess who comes back to the king.
Kevin – The mean rulers
John- Yep those same trouble makers. Here they came saying ,O king you wrote a law and the law you wrote can’t be changed! Needless to say the king was not happy to see them coming. But he knew they were right and he gave the order for Daniel to be thrown in the lions’ den.
Kevin- That must have been awful for the king to have to put Daniel with hungry lions.
John- Yes with real live lions! You know this story well. So before they threw Daniel in, the king said something like, “May your God, whom you serve continually, rescue you!”
Then they put Daniel in the lions’ den and put a big stone over the mouth of the den.
The king sealed it with his ring and all the other officials sealed it with their rings too. This was so no one could move the stone and rescue Daniel without breaking the seal.
Kevin – NO ONE BUT GOD COULD SAVE DANIEL.
John- The king stayed up all night! He didn’t eat anything. He didn’t have any fun. He prayed and fasted for Daniel. And you know what! The first ray of sunshine to pop up the king went running out to the lions’ den!! He cried out, “Daniel, servant of the living God, has your God, whom you serve continually, been able to rescue you from the lions? And are you ready for this?
. . . Daniel answered, “O king, live forever! My God sent his angel, and
he shut the mouths of the lions. They have not hurt me,
because I was found innocent in his sight. Nor have I ever done any wrong before you, O king.”
Kevin – I like that story!
John – That’s not all. You know what the king did then?
Kevin – What?
John- The king was so happy he gave orders for Daniel to be lifted out of the lions’ den. And when Daniel was lifted out there wasn’t even a scratch on him cause he trusted in God.
Oh, and you want to know what happened to the wicked nasty men who planned all this?
They were thrown in the same lions den with the same lions and they didn’t even touch the bottom of the den before the lions had crushed them to bits!
Kevin – Wow, that shows how important it is to serve God.
John – That’s RIGHT! I bet they wish they knew Daniel’s God!!!
You know what we can learn from Daniel?
Kevin – God will take care of us if we serve Him and trust in Him.
